Bowerbirds

Every so often I discover some new music that reminds me that it's so easy to miss out on a great band. More often than not, it's just a matter of luck whether you find out about them. Bowerbirds are once such example and it's no wonder that The Mountain Goats are fans after listening to them.

The Bowerbirds released their debut album Hymns for a Dark Horse last year though I only came across them barely a week ago. It was only because checked out the Dead Oceans website for some new music.

I've only heard 'In Our Talons' so far but it's made me want to hear the rest of their album. It's a song that is rich in harmony and has an element that harks back to a more rustic time. At times I think of Beirut but somewhat away from the gypsy and Eastern European influences, with a bitof the harmonic folk of bands like Fairport Convention.

Originally released on Burly Times Records, Hymns for a Dark Horse will be re-released on the Dead Oceans label on 19 June.
