The Audreys @ ANU BAR

Other than music festivals I don't really see bands that I haven't heard before. I know at festivals, acts can often surprise you with how good they are and you become a fan. That happened last night when I went to see The Audreys at ANU Bar, not having heard their music before.

I got in over half way through the support act which turned out to be J Walker, the frontman from Machine Translations. I was a bit disappointed that I turned up late as he played well but oh well, next time maybe.

Not knowing what to expect, other than they were a roots band (mainly from reading they won an ARIA in that category), my first impression of the Audreys was that they reminded me of a cross between the Handsome Family and more jazz-influenced vocal style of the Fairport Convention, two bands that I quite like. The fact that I wasn't familiar with their music meant that there were no songs that I wanted them to play and was more open to them than listening to a band who have one or two songs that I know.

I have to say that it was perfect show after a busy week. The music suited an eas Saturday night, the venue had a relaxed atmosphere and everyone at the front was sitting down, listening attentively. It makes me think that maybe I should take a chance seeing bands I haven't heard before more often.
